Know Identical Twins and Non-Identical Twins

Why are there twins but they don't look alike? Maybe a question like this has crossed your mind. In fact, not all pairs of twins have the same face, aka identical twins. How come? This is why there are identical and not identical twin pairs. According to medical science, identical twins or not based on the number of eggs and sperm cells that play a role in fertilization and how they grow in the mother's womb.

Identical twins

Identical twins occur when a sperm cell fertilizes an egg. The fertilized egg then splits into two. The result is an identical twin fetus with the same gene or DNA, because it comes from one egg and one sperm cell. Therefore, identical pairs of twins always have the same sex (women or men), their faces look very similar, and usually share the same placenta in the womb.

Unidentified Twins (Fraternal Twins)

Did you know that identical twins are more common than identical twins. About 2/3 of the cases of twins are not identical twins. This twin occurs when two eggs are fertilized by two sperm cells. This is what makes the faces of twins not identical. In addition, fraternal twin pairs also do not have the same gene, can be born with a different sex (female-male), and have their respective placenta.

Supporting Factors for Twins

About 1 in 250 women have the opportunity to have twins. There are several factors that make you able to conceive identical or not identical twins, namely:
  • Age of pregnant women

  • Pregnant women aged 30-40 have higher estrogen levels than younger women. This means that their ovaries can produce more than one egg during ovulation. If at least two of the eggs are fertilized, they will not contain identical twins.
  • Heredity

  • Containing fraternal twins is more likely to occur in pregnant women who have fraternal twins or family history of fraternal twins. Whereas identical twins do not decrease in families. Even experts have yet to find out why identical twins can occur.
  • Number of previous pregnancies

  • If you've been pregnant before, the chances of pregnant women having twins are greater.
  • Race

  • Women from the Central African region (especially Nigeria) are most likely to have twins, while women from East Asia and South America are seen to have the lowest twin pregnancy rates.
  • Assisted reproduction method

  • IVF procedures or in vitro fertilization (IVF) can increase the chance of conceiving twins, because more than one embryo is injected into the uterus while undergoing this procedure.
  • Pregnant woman's body shape

  • Fraternal twins are more commonly experienced by pregnant women whose posture is taller than those of a body. So far it is not known what the exact relationship is between maternal height and twin pregnancy rates, but nutritional factors are thought to play a role.
The risk and level of inconvenience when conceiving or having twins, whether identical twins or fraternal twins, will certainly be greater. Therefore, if you want to have twins or are pregnant with twins, consult your midwife or obstetrician regularly so that the health of the child and the mother is maintained.
